Atlassian Confluence starting with 4.3.0 before 6.2.1 did not check if a user had permission to view a page when creating a workbox notification about new comments. An attacker who can login to Confluence could receive workbox notifications, which contain the content of comments, for comments added to a page after they started watching it even if they do not have permission to view the page itself.

The bug was discovered 10/29/2018. The weakness was shared 06/15/2017 with SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab (Website). The advisory is shared for download at jira.atlassian.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9505 since 06/07/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13245 (Atlassian Confluence Server Access Restriction Bypass Vulnerability (CONFSERVER-52560)).

Upgrading to version 4.3.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
