Details
A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg 2.0 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function avpriv_dv_produce_packet of the file libavformat/dv.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The issue has been introduced in 07/11/2013. The weakness was disclosed 09/07/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind with Google Security Team as dv: Add a guard to not overread the ppcm array as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.libav.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 58 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
Upgrading to version 0.8.9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.libav.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
