A vulnerability was found in GNU GRUB (unknown version). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function grub_ext2_read_block of the file fs/ext2.c. The grub_ext2_read_block function in fs/ext2.c in GNU GRUB before 2013-11-12, as used in shlr/grub/fs/ext2.c in radare2 1.5.0, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (excessive stack use and application crash) via a crafted binary file, related to use of a variable-size stack array.
The bug was discovered 06/12/2017. The weakness was presented 06/19/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at git.savannah.gnu.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-9763 since 06/19/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
