Details
A vulnerability was found in Foscam C1 1.9.1.12. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component ftp. The manipulation of the argument password with the input value r leads to a hard-coded credentials vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-798. The product contains hard-coded credentials, such as a password or cryptographic key, which it uses for its own inbound authentication, outbound communication to external components, or encryption of internal data. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Hard-coded FTP credentials (r:r) are included in the Foscam C1 running firmware 1.9.1.12. Knowledge of these credentials would allow remote access to any cameras found on the internet that do not have port 50021 blocked by an intermediate device.
The bug was discovered 06/19/2017. The weakness was shared 06/21/2017 by arma with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-8731 since 10/17/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1110.001.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101547 (Foscam C1 IP Camera FTP Hard Coded Password), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP and running in the context r.
Proper firewalling of tcp/50021 is able to address this issue. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101547) and SecurityFocus (BID 99193†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
