GNU C Library up to 2.24 libresolv res_query null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library up to 2.24 (Software Library) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function res_query of the component libresolv. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

res_query in libresolv in glibc before 2.25 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and process crash).

The bug was discovered 08/03/2015. The weakness was presented 06/27/2017 by Florian Weimer with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceware.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5180 since 07/01/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 588 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99204 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : glibc vulnerability (K55001100)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171603 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for glibc (SUSE-SU-2018:2883-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.25 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99204) and SecurityFocus (BID 99324†). See VDB-108303, VDB-108402 and VDB-143746 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
