Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in systemd up to 223. This issue affects the function dns_packet_new of the component DNS Response Handler. The manipulation as part of a TCP Packet leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
In systemd through 233, certain sizes passed to dns_packet_new in systemd-resolved can cause it to allocate a buffer that's too small. A malicious DNS server can exploit this via a response with a specially crafted TCP payload to trick systemd-resolved into allocating a buffer that's too small, and subsequently write arbitrary data beyond the end of it.
The bug was discovered 06/27/2017. The weakness was released 06/28/2017 by Chris Coulson (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9445 since 06/05/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101083 (Ubuntu 16.10 / 17.04 : systemd vulnerability (USN-3341-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170231 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for systemd (SUSE-SU-2017:2031-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101083) and SecurityFocus (BID 99302†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
