The DirectX component in Microsoft Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, 1703, and Windows Server 2016 allows an authenticated attacker to run arbitrary code in kernel mode via a specially crafted application, aka "DirectX Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 06/19/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/19/2017 by Richard Zhu with Zero Day Initiative as KB4022715 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-8579 since 05/03/2017. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. A single authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/21/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100759 (KB4022714: Windows 10 Version 1511 June 2017 Cumulative Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91385 (Microsoft Windows Security Update June 2017).
Applying the patch KB4022715 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
