A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Webmin 1.840 (Software Management Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the file webmin/change_referers.cgi. The manipulation of the argument referers with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-79. The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users. Impacted is integrity.
The bug was discovered 10/16/2017. The weakness was disclosed 07/02/2017 by Andy Tan (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-9313 since 05/30/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 16 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 108559 (Webmin < 1.850 Multiple Cross Site Scripting Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 87361 (Webmin Multiple Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.850 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
