Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 CoreGraphics JBIG2 Data memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Apple iOS up to 6.1.4 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component CoreGraphics. The manipulation as part of a JBIG2 Data leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Buffer overflow in CoreGraphics in Apple Mac OS X before 10.8.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via crafted JBIG2 data in a PDF document.

The weakness was published 09/18/2013 by Felix Groebert with Google Security Team as APPLE-SA-2013-09-18-2 iOS 7 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at prod.lists.apple.com. The mailinglist post contains:

Viewing a maliciously crafted PDF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution Description: A buffer overflow existed in the handling of JBIG2 encoded data in PDF files. This issue was addressed through additional bounds checking.
This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-1025 since 01/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/25/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70257 (Apple TV < 6.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121456 (Apple Mountain Lion v10.8.5 and Security Update 2013-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2013-09-12-1)).

Upgrading to version iOS 7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
