Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file drivers/char/lp.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-787. The product writes data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Linux drivers/char/lp.c Out-of-Bounds Write. Due to a missing bounds check, and the fact that parport_ptr integer is static, a 'secure boot' kernel command line adversary (can happen due to bootloader vulns, e.g. Google Nexus 6's CVE-2016-10277, where due to a vulnerability the adversary has partial control over the command line) can overflow the parport_nr array in the following code, by appending many (>LP_NO) 'lp=none' arguments to the command line.
The bug was discovered 05/22/2017. The weakness was presented 07/17/2017 by Roee Hay (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-1000363 since 07/10/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 28 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100922 (Ubuntu 17.04 : linux, linux-meta vulnerabilities (USN-3324-1) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196829 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux, Linux-meta Vulnerabilities (USN-3335-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100922) and SecurityFocus (BID 98651†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
