Microsoft Windows up to XP WINS Name Validator memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows up to XP (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component WINS Name Validator. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) in Windows NT Server 4.0 SP 6a, NT Terminal Server 4.0 SP 6, Windows 2000 Server SP3 and SP4, and Windows Server 2003 does not properly validate the computer name value in a WINS packet, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (server crash), which results in an "unchecked buffer" and possibly triggers a buffer overflow, aka the "Name Validation Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 11/26/2004. The weakness was released 12/14/2004 by Kostya Kortchinsky with CERT Renater as MS04-045 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0567 since 06/15/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 3 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at beyonce.beyondsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 18 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15962 (MS04-045: WINS Code Execution (870763)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90199 (Microsoft Windows WINS Replication Buffer Overflow Vulnerability (MS04-045)).

Upgrading to version 1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS04-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 11684. In this case the pattern |00 00 00 06| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2645.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18259), Exploit-DB (733), Tenable (15962), SecurityFocus (BID 11922†) and OSVDB (12370†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-1011. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
