A vulnerability was found in Apple macOS up to 10.12.5 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component curl. The bug was discovered 12/21/2016. The weakness was released 07/19/2017 by Daniel Stenberg as HT207922 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2016-9586 since 11/23/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Multiple issues were addressed by updating to version 7.54.0.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 100 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99134 (macOS 10.12.x < 10.12.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (httpoxy)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176814 (Debian Security Update for curl (DLA 1568-1)).
Upgrading to version 10.12.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
