A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in ATutor up to 2.2.1 (Learning Management Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the file /mods/_core/courses/users/create_course.php. The manipulation of the argument icon with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Directory Traversal exists in ATutor before 2.2.2 via the icon parameter to /mods/_core/courses/users/create_course.php. The attacker can read an arbitrary file by visiting get_course_icon.php?id= after the traversal attack.
The bug was discovered 02/24/2016. The weakness was published 07/22/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-10400 since 07/22/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
