OWASP ESAPI 2.0.1/2.0GA Symmetric Crypto cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in OWASP ESAPI 2.0.1/2.0GA. This issue affects an unknown function of the component Symmetric Crypto. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The authenticated-encryption feature in the symmetric-encryption implementation in the OWASP Enterprise Security API (ESAPI) for Java 2.x before 2.1.0 does not properly resist tampering with serialized ciphertext, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass intended cryptographic protection mechanisms via an attack against authenticity in the default configuration, involving a null MAC and a zero MAC length.

The weakness was released 08/21/2013 by Philippe Arteau as [Esapi-dev] ESAPI Java and Authenticated encryption implementation as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.owasp.org. The public release was coordinated with OWASP. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5679 since 09/03/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

After 4 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at lists.owasp.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80532 (Fedora 20 : owasp-esapi-java-2.1.0-2.fc20 (2015-0259)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123171 (Fedora Security Update for owasp-esapi-java (FEDORA-2015-0322)).

Upgrading to version 2.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at owasp.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (87124), Tenable (80532), SecurityFocus (BID 62415†), OSVDB (97408†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48245†). lists.owasp.org is providing further details. Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-65056. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
