A vulnerability was found in VMware vCenter Server 6.5 (Server Management Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file /tmp of the component libDeployPkg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. VMware Tools prior to 10.0.9 contains multiple file system races in libDeployPkg, related to the use of hard-coded paths under /tmp. Successful exploitation of this issue may result in a local privilege escalation.
The bug was discovered 07/27/2017. The weakness was released 07/27/2017 as VMSA-2017-0013 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5191 since 07/01/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication.
