Dell iDRAC6 Intelligent Platform Management Interface improper authentication

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Dell iDRAC6. This issue affects an unknown code of the component Intelligent Platform Management Interface. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Dell iDRAC6 with firmware 1.x before 1.92 and 2.x and 3.x before 3.42, and iDRAC7 with firmware before 1.23.23, allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary IPMI commands by using cipher suite 0 (aka cipher zero) and an arbitrary password. NOTE: the vendor disputes the significance of this issue, stating "DRAC s are intended to be on a separate management network; they are not designed nor intended to be placed on or connected to the Internet."

The weakness was shared 02/22/2013 by Dan Farmer as Remediation for critical vulnerabilities in third-party components used in McAfee Email Gateway and Web Security/IronMail Appliances as confirmed exploit (Website). The advisory is shared at fish2.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-4783 since 07/08/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/06/2017).

A public exploit has been developed by Dan Farmer and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at fish2.com. It is declared as functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42415 (IPMI 2.0 Cipher Type Zero Authentication Bypass Vulnerability).

It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting Change Password.
