Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in StashCat up to 1.7.5. This issue affects the function math.random in the library CryptoJS.lib.WordArray.random() of the component Message Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a risky encryption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-327. The product uses a broken or risky cryptographic algorithm or protocol. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An issue was discovered in heinekingmedia StashCat through 1.7.5 for Android, through 0.0.80w for Web, and through 0.0.86 for Desktop. To encrypt messages, AES in CBC mode is used with a pseudo-random secret. This secret and the IV are generated with math.random() in previous versions and with CryptoJS.lib.WordArray.random() in newer versions, which uses math.random() internally. This is not cryptographically strong.
The bug was discovered 07/31/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/01/2017 as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-11133 since 07/09/2017. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
