Affected is the function addOrModifyUser addOrModifyUser of the file servlets/DCOperationsServlet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Password). Manage Engine Desktop Central 9 before build 90135 allows remote attackers to change passwords of users with the Administrator role via an addOrModifyUser operation to servlets/DCOperationsServlet.
The bug was discovered 03/27/2015. The weakness was disclosed 08/02/2017 with Zohocorp as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2560 since 03/19/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82472 (ManageEngine Desktop Central < 9 Build 90135 Unauthenticated Admin Password Reset), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115230 (ManageEngine Desktop Central Unauthorized Administrative Password Reset Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 9 Build 90135 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
