A vulnerability was found in OpenCV up to 3.3 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function cv::imread of the file utils.cpp. The manipulation as part of a Image File leads to a out-of-bounds write vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-787. OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) through 3.3 has an out-of-bounds write error in the FillColorRow8 function in utils.cpp when reading an image file by using cv::imread.
The bug was discovered 08/04/2017. The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-12605 since 08/06/2017. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103575 (Debian DLA-1117-1 : opencv security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 171242 (OpenSUSE Security Update for opencv (openSUSE-SU-2018:1385-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
