A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Google Android up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects the function updateMessageStatus. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The updateMessageStatus function in Android 5.1.1 and earlier allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer exception and process crash).
The bug was discovered 08/11/2015. The weakness was presented 08/07/2017 with Trend Micro (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.trendmicro.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3839 since 05/12/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
