Details
A vulnerability was found in Intel Ethernet Diagnostics Driver up to 1.3.0 on Windows (Hardware Driver Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code of the file IQVW32.sys/IQVW64.sys. The manipulation as part of a IOCTL Call leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
(1) IQVW32.sys before 1.3.1.0 and (2) IQVW64.sys before 1.3.1.0 in the Intel Ethernet diagnostics driver for Windows allows local users to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges via a crafted (a) 0x80862013, (b) 0x8086200B, (c) 0x8086200F, or (d) 0x80862007 IOCTL call.
The bug was discovered 03/14/2015. The weakness was disclosed 08/09/2017 by Glafkos Charalambous as EDB-ID 36392 as not defined exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2291 since 03/13/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Glafkos Charalambous and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 879 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 02/10/2023 with a due date of 03/03/2023:
Apply updates per vendor instructions.Upgrading to version 1.3.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (36392), EUVD (EUVD-2015-2389) and SecurityFocus (BID 79623†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
