Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apache Tomcat up to 8.5.15/9.0.0.M21 (Application Server Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component HTTP2. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
The HTTP/2 implementation in Apache Tomcat 9.0.0.M1 to 9.0.0.M21 and 8.5.0 to 8.5.15 bypassed a number of security checks that prevented directory traversal attacks. It was therefore possible to bypass security constraints using a specially crafted URL.
The bug was discovered 08/10/2017. The weakness was shared 08/11/2017 by Security Team with Apache (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-7675 since 04/11/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1006 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102589 (Apache Tomcat 8.5.x < 8.5.16 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176152 (Debian Security Update for tomcat8 (DSA 3974-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
