Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iOS 7.0.1 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected is an unknown part of the component Call Button Handler. The manipulation as part of a Tapping leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Passcode Lock in Apple iOS before 7.0.2 on iPhone devices allows physically proximate attackers to bypass an intended passcode requirement, and dial arbitrary telephone numbers, by making a series of taps of the emergency-call button to trigger a NULL pointer dereference.

The weakness was shared 09/26/2013 by Karam Daoud and Andrew Chung as APPLE-SA-2013-09-26-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-5160 since 08/15/2013. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068. The advisory points out:

A NULL dereference existed in the lock screen which would cause it to restart if the emergency call button was tapped repeatedly. While the lock screen was restarting, the call dialer could not get the lock screen state and assumed the device was unlocked, and so allowed non-emergency numbers to be dialed.

It is declared as functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.

Upgrading to version 7.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed by avoiding the NULL dereference.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 62599†), OSVDB (97821†), Secunia (SA54813†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41652†). Further details are available at zdnet.com. The entry VDB-65048 is related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
