Xamarin.iOS 6.2.1/6.3 Build 863 on MacOS access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Xamarin.iOS 6.2.1/6.3 Build 863 on MacOS and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Xamarin.iOS update component on systems running macOS allows an attacker to run arbitrary code as root, aka "Xamarin.iOS Elevation Of Privilege Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 08/14/2017. The weakness was presented 08/14/2017 by Yorick Koster as KB4037359 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-8665 since 05/03/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:

An elevation of privilege vulnerability exists when the Xamarin.iOS update component improperly handles directories and binaries. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could run arbitrary code as root. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Only systems running macOS are affected by this vulnerability.

A public exploit has been developed by Securify and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Applying the patch KB4037359 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42454) and SecurityFocus (BID 100308†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
