A vulnerability was found in Network Security Services (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __hash_open of the file lib/dbm/src/hash.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the __hash_open function in lib/dbm/src/hash.c in Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) allows context-dependent attackers to have unspecified impact using a crafted cert8.db file.
The bug was discovered 08/09/2017. The weakness was published 08/09/2017 by Brian Carpenter as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-11696 since 07/27/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack.
