Linux Kernel up to 4.12.9 Operand Cache nseval.c acpi_ns_evaluate ACPI Table information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.12.9. This affects the function acpi_ns_evaluate of the file drivers/acpi/acpica/nseval.c of the component Operand Cache. Performing a manipulation as part of ACPI Table results in information disclosure. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2017-13695. The attack must be initiated from a local position. There is no exploit available. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.12.9 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function acpi_ns_evaluate of the file drivers/acpi/acpica/nseval.c of the component Operand Cache. The manipulation as part of a ACPI Table leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The acpi_ns_evaluate() function in drivers/acpi/acpica/nseval.c in the Linux kernel through 4.12.9 does not flush the operand cache and causes a kernel stack dump, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory and bypass the KASLR protection mechanism (in the kernel through 4.9) via a crafted ACPI table.

The bug was discovered 08/25/2017. The weakness was shared 08/25/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-13695 since 08/25/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103117 (Fedora 26 : kernel (2017-6764d16965)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157820 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2018-4245)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103117) and SecurityFocus (BID 100497†). The entries VDB-105727, VDB-105728, VDB-106021 and VDB-113848 are related to this item. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
