Details
A vulnerability was found in GNU C Library 2.16 (Software Library). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function strcoll of the file string/strcoll_l.c of the component C Library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Integer overflow in string/strcoll_l.c in the GNU C Library (aka glibc or libc6) 2.17 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long string, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was shared 09/05/2012 with Red Hat Security Response Team as Issue #1 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4412 since 08/21/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69436 (Fedora 19 : glibc-2.17-13.fc19 (2013-15053)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195942 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Eglibc Vulnerabilities (USN-1991-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at sourceware.org. A possible mitigation has been published 11 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
