Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenJPEG 2.2.0 (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function opj_tcd_code_block_enc_allocate_data in the library lib/openjp2/tcd.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An off-by-one error was discovered in opj_tcd_code_block_enc_allocate_data in lib/openjp2/tcd.c in OpenJPEG 2.2.0. The vulnerability causes an out-of-bounds write, which may lead to remote denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow affecting opj_mqc_flush in lib/openjp2/mqc.c and opj_t1_encode_cblk in lib/openjp2/t1.c) or possibly remote code execution.
The bug was discovered 08/16/2017. The weakness was published 09/05/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-14151 since 09/05/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 20 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
