A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS 7.0.2 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Find My iPhone. The manipulation as part of a Airplane Mode leads to a security check vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-358. The product does not implement or incorrectly implements one or more security-relevant checks as specified by the design of a standardized algorithm, protocol, or technique. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 10/03/2013 by Ben Schlabs with Security Research Labs as not defined news (Website). The advisory is shared at reuters.com. The public release happened without involvement of Apple. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue. Is an attacker able to switch the iPhone to airplane mode, the function "Find My iPhone" can not be used anymore for a remote wipe. An attacker is gaining time to lookup the owners e-mail address. By requesting the credentials, he is able to take full control over the iPhone
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting . Configure the iPhone to not allow the activation of airplane mode if the phone is locked.
