Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in gdk-pixbuf 2.36.6. This issue affects the function tiff_image_parse. The manipulation as part of a TIFF File leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An exploitable integer overflow vulnerability exists in the tiff_image_parse functionality of Gdk-Pixbuf 2.36.6 when compiled with Clang. A specially crafted tiff file can cause a heap-overflow resulting in remote code execution. An attacker can send a file or a URL to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 08/30/2017. The weakness was shared 09/05/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2870 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 102939 (FreeBSD : gdk-pixbuf -- multiple vulnerabilities (5a1f1a86-8f4c-11e7-b5af-a4badb2f4699)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170336 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for gdk-pixbuf (SUSE-SU-2017:2381-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
