The REST Plugin in Apache Struts 2.3.7 through 2.3.33 and 2.5 through 2.5.12 is using an outdated XStream library which is vulnerable and allow perform a DoS attack using malicious request with specially crafted XML payload.

The bug was discovered 09/05/2017. The weakness was released 09/05/2017 by Huijun Chen and Xiaolong Zhu as S2-051 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at struts.apache.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-9793 since 06/21/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely.
