Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Cisco IOS XE on ASR 920 (Router Operating System) (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component USB Modem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the USB-modem code of Cisco IOS XE Software running on Cisco ASR 920 Series Aggregation Services Routers could allow an authenticated, local attacker to inject and execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to improper input validation of the platform usb modem command in the CLI of the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by modifying the platform usb modem command in the CLI of an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to inject and execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system of an affected device. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCve48949.

The bug was discovered 09/06/2017. The weakness was released 09/07/2017 as cisco-sa-20170906-asr920-1 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-6796 since 03/09/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/11/2021).
