The App Container feature in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions and obtain sensitive information from a different container via a Trojan horse application, aka "App Container Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 10/08/2013 as MS13-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3880 since 06/03/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70333 (MS13-081: Vulnerabilities in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2870008)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90913 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution (MS13-081)).
Applying the patch MS13-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
