Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.5 (Programming Language Software). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component XML External Entity Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5, 3.5 SP1, 3.5.1, 4, and 4.5 does not properly parse a DTD during XML digital-signature validation, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash or hang) via a crafted signed XML document, aka "Entity Expansion Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 10/08/2013 by James Forshaw with Context Information Security as MS13-082 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-3860 since 06/03/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70334 (MS13-082: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2878890)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90912 (Microsoft .NET Framework Code Execution and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (MS13-082)).
Applying the patch MS13-082 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13179.
