A vulnerability was found in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2007/2010/2013 (Groupware Software) and classified as very critical. This issue affects an unknown part of the component Input Sanitizer. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, 2013, and 2013 RT; Office 2007 SP3, 2010 SP1 and SP2, 2013, and 2013 RT; Office for Mac 2011; Excel Viewer; Office Compatibility Pack SP3; and Excel Services and Word Automation Services in SharePoint Server 2013 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document, aka "Microsoft Excel Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 10/08/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk, Ben Hawkes and Ivan Fratric with Google Security Team as MS13-084 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-3889 since 06/03/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2021).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70336 (MS13-084: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft SharePoint Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2885089)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110224 (Microsoft Excel Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-085)).
Applying the patch MS13-084 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
