The Windows kernel component on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT 8.1, Windows 10 Gold, 1511, 1607, and 1703, and Windows Server 2016 allows an information disclosure vulnerability when it improperly handles objects in memory, aka "Win32k Information Disclosure Vulnerability". This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2017-8677, CVE-2017-8680, CVE-2017-8681, and CVE-2017-8687.
The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was shared 09/12/2017 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as KB4038788 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared for download at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-8678 since 05/03/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. An information disclosure vulnerability exists when the Windows kernel improperly handles objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could obtain information to further compromise the user’s system.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103127 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 September 2017 Security Updates), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
