Veritas Backup Exec up to 9.1 stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Veritas Backup Exec up to 9.1 (Backup Software). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Stack-based buffer overflow in the Agent Browser in Veritas Backup Exec 8.x before 8.60.3878 Hotfix 68, and 9.x before 9.1.4691 Hotfix 40, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a registration request with a long hostname.

The bug was discovered 11/02/2004. The weakness was published 12/16/2004 by Patrik Karlsson with Veritas (Website). The advisory is shared at support.veritas.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1172 since 12/13/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

After 3 weeks, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at dfind.kd-team.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 44 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 16232 (VERITAS Backup Exec Agent Browser Registration Request Remote Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gain a shell remotely and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42006 (Symantec Veritas Backup Exec Agent Browser Stack Based Buffer Overflow).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.veritas.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 3084. In this case the pattern |02 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 3233.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (18506), Exploit-DB (750), Tenable (16232), SecurityFocus (BID 11974†) and OSVDB (12418†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
