Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft .NET Framework up to 4.7 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0, 3.5, 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, 4.6.2 and 4.7 allow an attacker to execute code remotely via a malicious document or application, aka ".NET Framework Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 09/12/2017. The weakness was published 09/12/2017 by Alex with FireEye, Inc. as KB4040973 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-8759 since 05/03/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Microsoft .NET Framework processes untrusted input. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability in software using the .NET framework could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
A public exploit has been developed by Voulnet and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as attacked. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103127 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 September 2017 Security Updates), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91410 (Microsoft .NET Framework Security Update September 2017). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 11/03/2021 with a due date of 05/03/2022:
