A vulnerability was found in Dovecot up to 2.2.16 (Mail Server Software). It has been declared as problematic. The ssl-proxy-openssl.c function in Dovecot before 2.2.17, when SSLv3 is disabled, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (login process crash) via vectors related to handshake failures.
The bug was discovered 04/26/2015. The weakness was disclosed 09/19/2017 by Hanno Böck (Website). The advisory is shared at dovecot.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-3420 since 04/27/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1587.003 for this issue.
