A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat up to 7.0.79 on Windows (Application Server Software). It has been declared as critical. When running Apache Tomcat 7.0.0 to 7.0.79 on Windows with HTTP PUTs enabled (e.g. via setting the readonly initialisation parameter of the Default to false) it was possible to upload a JSP file to the server via a specially crafted request. This JSP could then be requested and any code it contained would be executed by the server.

The bug was discovered 09/21/2017. The weakness was released 09/19/2017 (Website). The advisory is available at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-12615 since 08/07/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
