Linux Kernel up to 4.13.3 KVM Subsystem arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.3 (Operating System). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c of the component KVM Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The KVM subsystem in the Linux kernel through 4.13.3 allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (assertion failure, and hypervisor hang or crash) via an out-of bounds guest_irq value, related to arch/x86/kvm/vmx.c and virt/kvm/eventfd.c.

The bug was discovered 09/07/2017. The weakness was published 09/26/2017 with Amazon as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-1000252 since 09/26/2017. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 13 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103365 (Debian DSA-3981-1 : linux - security update (BlueBorne) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236735 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2018:1130)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103365) and SecurityFocus (BID 101022†). Similar entries are available at VDB-106296 and VDB-106737. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
