Details
A vulnerability was found in Botan up to 1.10.16/1.11.x/2.2.x. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component RSA. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A cryptographic cache-based side channel in the RSA implementation in Botan before 1.10.17, and 1.11.x and 2.x before 2.3.0, allows a local attacker to recover information about RSA secret keys, as demonstrated by CacheD. This occurs because an array is indexed with bits derived from a secret key.
The bug was discovered 09/25/2017. The weakness was presented 09/26/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-14737 since 09/25/2017. The exploitability is told to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103710 (Debian DLA-1125-1 : botan1.10 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
