IBM WebSphere Portal 7.0/8.0/8.5/9.0 Request path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in IBM WebSphere Portal 7.0/8.0/8.5/9.0 (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with the input value /../ leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

IBM WebSphere Portal 7.0, 8.0, 8.5, and 9.0 could allow a remote attacker to traverse directories on the system. An attacker could send a specially-crafted URL request containing "dot dot" sequences (/../) to view arbitrary files on the system. IBM X-Force ID: 132117.

The bug was discovered 09/20/2017. The weakness was released 09/28/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at ibm.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-1577 since 11/30/2016. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103568 (IBM WebSphere Portal (swg22008586)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370586 (IBM Websphere Portal Path Traversal Vulnerability (swg22008586)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103568) and SecurityFocus (BID 101017†). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
