Cisco IOS up to 15.6 PROFINET Discovery/Configuration Protoco PN-DCP Messages input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Cisco IOS up to 15.6 (Router Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component PROFINET Discovery/Configuration Protoco. The manipulation as part of a PN-DCP Messages leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

A vulnerability in the implementation of the PROFINET Discovery and Configuration Protocol (PN-DCP) for Cisco IOS 12.2 through 15.6 could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause an affected device to reload, resulting in a denial of service (DoS) condition. The vulnerability is due to the improper parsing of ingress PN-DCP Identify Request packets destined to an affected device. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted PN-DCP Identify Request packet to an affected device and then continuing to send normal PN-DCP Identify Request packets to the device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause the affected device to reload, resulting in a DoS condition. This vulnerability affects Cisco devices that are configured to process PROFINET messages. Beginning with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(52)SE, PROFINET is enabled by default on all the base switch module and expansion-unit Ethernet ports. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCuz47179.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2017. The weakness was disclosed 09/29/2017 with Cisco (Website). The advisory is shared at securitytracker.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-12235 since 08/03/2017. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/09/2024).

It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103670 (Cisco IOS Software PROFINET denial of service (cisco-sa-20170927-profinet)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CISCO and running in the context c. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316145 (Cisco IOS Software for Cisco Industrial Ethernet Switches PROFINET Denial of Service Vulnerability (cisco-sa-20170927-profinet)). The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 03/03/2022 with a due date of 03/24/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Addressing this vulnerability is possible by firewalling . A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103670) and SecurityFocus (BID 101043†). The entries VDB-107240, VDB-107236, VDB-107235 and VDB-107234 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
