Header::readfrom in IlmImf/ImfHeader.cpp in OpenEXR 2.2.0 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (excessive memory allocation) via a crafted file that is accessed with the ImfOpenInputFile function in IlmImf/ImfCRgbaFile.cpp.

The bug was discovered 09/27/2017. The weakness was published 10/03/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-14988 since 10/02/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
