Details
A vulnerability was found in Mercurial up to 4.2. It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component SSH. The manipulation as part of a Hostname leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mercurial prior to 4.3 did not adequately sanitize hostnames passed to ssh, leading to possible shell-injection attacks.
The bug was discovered 08/10/2017. The weakness was released 10/05/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-1000116 since 10/03/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103227 (Amazon Linux AMI : mercurial (ALAS-2017-893)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236464 (Red Hat Update for mercurial (RHSA-2017:2489)).
Upgrading to version 4.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (103227) and SecurityFocus (BID 100290†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-107475. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
