A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 9 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function setItemInfo of the component Media Player. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. The Microsoft Windows Media Player 9.0 ActiveX control may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary web script in the Local computer zone via the (1) artist or (2) song fields of a music file, if the file is processed using Internet Explorer.

The bug was discovered 12/18/2004. The weakness was released 12/20/2004 by Arman Nayyeri (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-1324 since 01/06/2005. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
