A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark up to 2.4.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file epan/dissectors/packet-mbim.c of the component MBIM Dissector. In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.1 and 2.2.0 to 2.2.9, the MBIM dissector could crash or exhaust system memory. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-mbim.c by changing the memory-allocation approach.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2017. The weakness was published 10/10/2017 as Bug 14056 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-15193 since 10/09/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely.
