Wireshark up to 2.4.1 MBIM Dissector packet-mbim.c Packet resource consumption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Wireshark up to 2.4.1 (Packet Analyzer Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the file epan/dissectors/packet-mbim.c of the component MBIM Dissector. The manipulation as part of a Packet leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

In Wireshark 2.4.0 to 2.4.1 and 2.2.0 to 2.2.9, the MBIM dissector could crash or exhaust system memory. This was addressed in epan/dissectors/packet-mbim.c by changing the memory-allocation approach.

The bug was discovered 10/10/2017. The weakness was published 10/10/2017 as Bug 14056 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-15193 since 10/09/2017. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
