Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality.
The bug was discovered 10/10/2017. The weakness was shared 10/10/2017 as KB4041693 as confirmed security update guide (Website). The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-11784 since 07/31/2017. The exploitation appears to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue. The advisory points out:
An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the Windows kernel that could allow an attacker to retrieve information that could lead to a Kernel Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) bypass. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could retrieve the memory address of a kernel object. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would have to log on to an affected system and run a specially crafted application. The security update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the Windows kernel handles memory addresses.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103746 (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 October 2017 Security Updates (KRACK)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91411 (Microsoft Windows Security Update October 2017 (KRACK Attack) (ROCA)).
