Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.13.5 (Operating System) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file arch/x86/kvm/mmu.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
arch/x86/kvm/mmu.c in the Linux kernel through 4.13.5, when nested virtualisation is used, does not properly traverse guest pagetable entries to resolve a guest virtual address, which allows L1 guest OS users to execute arbitrary code on the host OS or cause a denial of service (incorrect index during page walking, and host OS crash), aka an "MMU potential stack buffer overrun."
The bug was discovered 10/16/2017. The weakness was disclosed 10/11/2017 as Bug 1500380 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-12188 since 08/01/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 104132 (Virtuozzo 7 : readykernel-patch (VZA-2017-098)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Virtuozzo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236664 (Red Hat Update for kernel (RHSA-2018:0395)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (104132) and SecurityFocus (BID 101267†). The entry VDB-107763 is pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
